In the past, many accelerators were caught up after a few years by general- purpose processors, and it was difficult to find a solid business case for a new accelerator.

This time is different: there is almost a guarantee that the acceler- ator will stay ahead of a general-purpose core for many years. Future advanced computing platforms will contain several accelerators.

This creates formidable challenges: What will be the new abstractions that hide the complexity of the hardware platform? How to develop tools and applications for such complex platforms? How to guarantee safety and security? How to secure programmer productivity? etc.
