Introduction
I’ve loved electronics since I first saw a television in 1960 at the age of six years. My
family and I lived in the backwoods of Arkansas without electricity; so, I assumed it was
magic. I went into the military when I was nineteen years of age and became an electronic
technician. Later the U.S. Air Force sent me to engineering school to get my degree in
electrical engineering. Even later in life I taught electronic design at John Brown
University. I haven’t always made my living doing electronic design, but I have always
designed electronics at home as a hobby.
In this book I describe the function of field-effect transistors—JFETs and MOSFETs—
and how you can use them to design audio amplifiers. I do not describe high-frequency
amplifier design methods, and I do not describe the physics of how these transistors work.
There are plenty of other books that teach those things. I want this book to be a simple
introduction to FET amplifier design without other distractions.
I use many example designs with real transistors that you can duplicate in actual
hardware. I use a logical approach to teaching this subject so the example designs get
more complicated as you grow in knowledge. I also provide you with computer software
for doing the math associated with the designs; you’ll find a link at the end of this book
for downloading the software.
In the text I use first-person pronouns, active voice, and contractions; In other words, I
write like I talk. I hope you find this method of writing more personal and easier to
understand.
