1 Background
With the advancement in EDA technology and fabrication process, the complexity and size of digital designs is growing at a rapid pace. This increased design size demands some divide and conquer approach, so that development can be carried in parallel by various teams and the complexity management. Hierarchical design flows cope up with such scenario by managing complexity and coping with the increasing demands of infrastructure for them.
Big designs can be broken into smaller design blocks through logical partitioning or other division methodologies. This approach gives rise to hierarchical flow. Hierarchical flow promises:
?Relatively easier complexity involved in handling the broken designs.
?Using a hierarchical flow, the design can be concurrently developed by different teams at different locations, shortening the time to market to a greater extent.
?Reuse of IP is possible with hierarchical flow.
