stub ??? for Co-Verification of hardware and software

Co-Verification of hardware and software for ARM SOC design第二章stub节:
开头说：For processors that have no hardware support for debugging, the software debugger can communicate with the embedded system using a stub.
中间说：The stub software communicates with the debugger using a communication channel such as a serial port or Ethernet connection.
问题：communication channel such as a serial port or Ethernet connection 算不算是hardware提供的support for debugging？ 如果hardware processor不能提供communication channel,stub也应该无所作为吧？
