Classic Books Remain Best Sellers at ISSCC 2007
Books on Music and Mathematics and Advanced Excel are Sleepers
Katherine Olstein, SSCS Administrator, k.olstein@ieee.org
Four books popular at recent ISSCC meetings were best sellers at ISSCC2007:
| | | | CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation, 2ndEdition by R. Jacob Baker (Wiley-IEEE Press, 2004) ISBN: 978-0-471-70055-5,USD 99.95.
www.wiley.com | Understanding Delta-Sigma Data Converters by RichardSchreier and Gabor C. Temes, (Wiley-IEEE Press, 2004) ISBN: 978-0-471-46585-0,USD 99.95. | Analog Design Essentials, The Springer InternationalSeries in Engineering and Computer Science, Vol. 859 by Willy Sansen (Springer,2nd printing, 2006) ISBN: 978-0-387-25746-4, USD 99.00.
www.springer.com | The Design of CMOS Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuits, SecondEdition by Thomas H. Lee (Cambridge, 2003) ISBN-13: 9780521835398, USD80.00.

| CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation, 2nd Edition by R. JacobBaker was a conference best seller for the third year in a row. According tocomments by the publisher quoted in the October 2004 issue of theSSCS newsletter, “this comprehensive presentation of CMOS integratedcircuit design navigates readers through the process of implementing a chipfrom the physical definition to the design and simulation of the finishedproduct.” (www.ieee.org/portal/pages/sscs/04Oct/Books-SSCS.html)
Understanding Delta-Sigma Data Converters by Richard Schreier andGabor C. Temes, also from Wiley, has been a top ISSCC seller since 2005.In a review in the SSCS Newsletter of September 2005, Ian Galton said,“It provides a ‘one-stop shop’ for engineers who want acomprehensive introduction to the field of delta-sigma data converters. The authors are top researchers in the field with extensive industrial andacademic experience in delta-sigma data converter design. They are alsoexcellent teachers, with vast experience lecturing the fine points ofdelta-sigma data converter design to both university students and practicingengineers. As a result, the book is well polished, easy to understand, and provides a solid and broad introduction to the field.” www.ieee.org/portal/pages/sscs/05Sept/Schreier_and_Temes.html
Analog Design Essentials by Willy Sansen, Springer’s top sellerat ISSCC 2006, “contains all topics of importance to the analog designerwhich are essential to obtain sufficient insights to do a thorough job,”according to the publisher’s website. “The book starts withelementary stages in building up operational amplifiers. The synthesis ofopamps is covered in great detail. Many examples are included, operating at lowsupply voltages. Chapters on noise, distortion, filters, ADC/DACs andoscillators follow,” all based on the author’s extensive experiencein teaching. Slides are included on a CD-ROM as PDF files.
The Design of CMOS Radio-Frequency Integrated Circuits 2ndEdition, by Thomas H. Lee, was one of the two top sellers for CambridgeUniversity Press at ISSCC 2006 and sold comparably at the conference in2007.
Further commentary on the Lee and Sansen books may be found in the SSCSnewsletter review of best sellers at ISSCC 2006: www.ieee.org/portal/pages/sscs/06Mar/Best_Sellers_at_ISSCC.html
Conference “Sleepers”
Danielle Christensen, Engineering Editor at Oxford University Press, had ahunch that Music and Mathematics: From Pythagoras to Fractals, by JohnFauvel, Raymond Flood, and Robin Wilson, might be of interest at ISSCC but didnot imagine it would turn out to be Oxford’s best seller. www.oup.com
| | | Music and Mathematics: From Pythagoras to Fractals, byJohn Fauvel, Raymond Flood, and Robin Wilson (Oxford, 2006) ISBN-13:9780199298938, USD 32.50. | Advanced Excel for Scientific Data Analysis by Robert deLevie (Oxford, 2004) ,ISBN-13: 9780195152753, USD 59.50.
| Electromagnetics for High-Speed Analog and DigitalCommunication Circuits by Ali M. Niknejad (University of California,Berkeley, available March 2007) ISBN-13: 9780521853507, USD 85.00. | Equally surprising was Oxford’s second best seller: AdvancedExcel for Scientific Data Analysis by Robert de Levie. It is about“how you hot-wire Excel to do unusual things,” Ms. Christensensaid. De Levie, a chemist, is the author of more than 160 papers in analyticalchemistry and electrochemistry and several books, including an earlySpreadsheet Workbook for Quantitative Chemical Analysis (McGraw-Hill, 1992) anda textbook on the Principles of Quantitative Chemical Analysis (McGraw-Hill1997), according to the Oxford website. He taught analytical chemistry andelectrochemistry for 34 years at Georgetown University and is now an emeritusprofessor associated with Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine
The runaway best seller for Cambridge University Press wasElectromagnetics for High-Speed Analog and Digital CommunicationCircuits by Ali M. Niknejad, University of California, Berkeley (availableMarch 2007) ISBN-13: 9780521853507, USD 85.00. This news came as a surprise tothe author. “Most people would easily admit to disliking E&M or havegood horror stories about an E&M professor in college who drove themcrazy,” he said in an email interview, “but it's becoming soimportant in the design of high frequency/high data rate circuits and the ICcommunity is becoming aware of it.”
According to Cambridge, the book “begins with a review of the basics(the origin of resistance, capacitance, and inductance) and progresses to moreadvanced topics such as passive device design and layout, resonant circuits, impedance matching, high-speed switching circuits, and parasitic coupling andisolation techniques. Using examples and applications in RF and microwavesystems, the author describes transmission lines, transformers, and distributedcircuits and reviews state-of-the-art developments in Si based broadbandanalog, RF, microwave, and mm-wave circuits.”
An article by Prof. Niknejad is featured in this issue of the SSCSnewsletter.

An Elsevier reviewer said, “This isthe most recent book covering all aspects of digital systems testing. It is a“must read” for anyone focused on learning modern test issues, testresearch, and test practices.” The book sold well because testingrepresents “more than 50% of the development cycle these days,”said Charles Glaser, Elsevier’s ISSCC representative.
