A must have reference for PLL designers December 30, 2012 By Otto Lee, Ph.D.
First off, this is not a book for beginners, nor is it a text book for PLL. It is rather a compendium of years of real world design experiences around PLLs and many of its applications in frequency acquisition.

The standalone PLL as a phase detector is well documented in any college level text book, but that's where academic and the real world diverges. Real circuit design has to take sampling, phase noise, jitter, interference, compression and many other nonlinear behavior into considerations. This book covers these topics with descriptive language and computer simulation instead of complex mathematical derivations. Valuable design insights with discrete component assistive circuits are offered throughout the book.

Chapters on carrier recovery for analog signal, clock recovery for digital data, and frequency synthesis are particularly well done. R&D engineers, transmitter and receiver designers will benefit from this book.



The Real World of Phase Locked Loops December 1, 2012 By Barry Blesser
While there are many textbooks that teach the theory and mathematics of phased locked loops for processing signals, it is difficult to get a feeling for the subject in the real world. What are the practical trade-offs when choosing a topology or architecture. Dan Talbot has captured a lifetime of real world experience working with RF signal processing, and especially phase locked loops, which are often the key building block in such systems. Dan belongs to the school that asserts that you do not real understand a technical subject unless you can put your ideas into words and pictures. Examples are taken from actual designs and represented in simulations.

Any practicing engineer who is faced with the task of designing a phase locked loop for signal processing should read this book, but it is not a starting text for beginners. Sadly, most engineers with Dan's experience do not write books and a lifetime of wisdom is lost.

Even though I have not designed a phase lock loop for decades, I found that ancient questions were answered, and my experiences gained a new perspective. The power of quadrature processing is clearly shown.
