Hi!
Why don't you google it?
The goals of Electronic and computing (electronic, Computer, communication, ...) engineers are application implementations. Applications are the things that you want. For example computing the FFT of a signal is an example of application or other can be amplifying the amplitude of a signal or sending the message over the air. So the only thing that makes the engineers to be different are applications.
In the past before the transistor technology advances, applications were existing but because of the limitations of technology, they were not being implemented. For example lots of communications theorys that are being used today, have been emerged from the 1920 decade even before the world war II happens.
By increasing the speed of transistors and also digital signal processing theorys, nowadays lots of applications are being shifted to the digital domain, because in digital, designing and controlling is so easier than Analog and the only things that are remaining in Analog and RF are some manipulations of signal like amplifying, VCO, ADC, DAC, ...
For example suppose a FFT processor. It's computing the Frequency components of signal after it's been sampled and digitized by an ADC. After that you can play with the signal in a way you like.
The other aspects of digital designs are tool supporting. About 80% of major company's tools are for Digital designs and also popular synthesizers like Design compilers are for digital.
