firstly , your mathamatic must well fine enough
secondly , your have to know signal and system relationship
the 3rd , you have to learn Matlab , to help you more understanding to " digital communication "
at this moment , if you are interested , you must learn DSP , and then
if you are VLSI designer , move to base-band simulation and RTL coding
if you are analog designer , move to mixed signa design or RF IC design
if you are system designer , sorry , you will know every domain relation and do system function verification ,
in general , digital communication project is huge , you have to pick up one area that you familiar , and do your job until you are expert ,
it is a long way , you must have some friends to help you during couple years
it is real difficult ,
