Product Description:
This book is ideal for the engineer, technician, hobbyist and student who have knowledge of the basic principles of PIC microcontrollers and want to develop more advanced applications using the 18F series.
The architecture of the PIC 18FXXX series as well as typical oscillator, reset, memory, and input-output circuits is completely detailed. After giving an introduction to programming in C, the book describes the project development cycle in full, giving details of the process of editing, compilation, error handling, programming and the use of specific development tools. The bulk of the book gives full details of tried and tested hands-on projects, such as the 12C BUS, USB BUS, CAN BUS, SPI BUS and real-time operating systems.
* A clear introduction to the PIC 18FXXX microcontroller's architecture
* 20 projects, including developing wireless and sensor network applications, using I2C BUS, USB BUS, CAN BUS and the SPI BUS, which give the block and circuit diagram, program description in PDL, program listing and program description.
* Numerous examples of using developmental tools: simulators, in-circuit debuggers (especially ICD2) and emulators
* A CDROM of all the programs, hex listings, diagrams, data sheets and tables
Summary: Misleading title, this book is not for advanced programmers
Rating: 1
I was very disappointed with this book. The title is very misleading. The projects are not at advanced and are mostly coded specially to use the MikroC compiler and will not work in other environments without extensive porting or rewriting.
Unless you are a beginner and use the MikroC compiler select a different book.
Summary: An advanced book on PIC microcontrollers? This is the one!
Rating: 5
This is an excellent book.
Most of the books on PIC microcontrollers are very basic. They do not go beyond the PIC16 series, and describe simple projects such as turning a light on and off, etc.
I have been waiting for an advanced book on PIC microcontrollers and I believe this is the one.
I needed to develop a microcontroller based data logging system to store data on an SD card. This well written book has proved extremely useful in my project.
In addition to the standard topics, it includes tested and working projects on numerous advanced topics, such as the USB bus and the CAN bus.
It is worth 5 stars, without any hesitation!

Are the PIC microcontrollers advanced or are the projects advanced?
The book is for beginners and I couldn't find any advanced projects in it. Not what I expected and as such being useless to me I had to give it away.
Next time I will not buy anything without viewing the contents of it.
Summary: Where's the Zigbee and Sample Code ?
Rating: 3
Well, upon further reading, I have modified my review yet again. As far as the first chapter was concerned, the writing style is outstanding and it was a great help to my understanding of PICs in general. Unfortunately, the author presents the material in the second chapter without the same consideration and I couldn't help but feel that I was reading the data sheet for timers and interrupts. Most notably, there was no sample code in Chapter 2 to really show you how to work the timers and interrupts, just charts and diagrams. I'm a little bothered by the fact it doesn't have anything on Zigbee as indicated on the front cover, The Zigbee problem is as follows: Have a look at the book cover indicated here. That's what the publishers website Newnes show also. The Subtitle in the photo says "From USb to Zigbee", the write up however says the subtitle is "From USB to RTOS". I reasoned that either way, I was going to get a pretty good write up on Zigbee. After the book arrived yesterday, firstly I noticed the subtitle on the cover is "From USB to RTOS". I checked the index for Zigbee and was directed to the introductory page 12, two sentence report on what Zigbee is. That's it as far as I can see unless there is more in the meat of the book that didn't make the index. Newnes never did answer an email explaining the discrepancy on the subtitles. It's not an old edition conflict that I can see as both indicate a publication date of 2008. I hope the book improves as I move on to later Chapters. Chapter 1 was five stars, Chapter 2 I'd give 1 star.
