I just finished installing VCS 2014.03 on Ubuntu as a virtual machine on Win 8.1pro.

My note is attached. The big trick is to install Ubuntu 12.04 instead of the latest. You can still download version 12.04 from www.ubuntu.com and go to alternative download section.

To get 32-bit vcs and dve running, install the following library:

   sudo apt-get install libx11-6:i386
   sudo apt-get install libxext6:i386
   sudo apt-get install libsm6:i386
   sudo apt-get install lib32z1
   sudo apt-get install lib32ncurses5

Installing these libraries will also get rid of some warning in dve console in 64-bit. Looks like the 64-bit dve is calling 32-bit vcsfind.exe.
