2. IC Design flow.

3. Domain knowledge.

1 and 2 are bases. 3 could make you stay longer in this field.

If you plan to design a CPU, you'd better know something about computer architecture, instruction pipeline, etc. All these things are your domain knowledge. If you have strong domain knowledge, you can create specification, define module interfaces and timing, and design high level architecture. If you don't, then someone else will do these tasks and give you a small piece to work on.
