The purpose of writing this book is to demystify the hardware design for software engineers as well as to elucidate the VLSI design and related technologies for students as well as researchers. This book refreshes the basic concepts for designing and developing an integrated circuit using advanced tools and techniques.
Organization of the Book This book is divided into 4 units, which cover all the subdomains of advanced VLSI design. After summarising the latest and advanced concepts of related technology, the technical questions related to that particular technology is given with solutions. Unit 1: Focuses on the validation of static timing performance of a design by introducing various timing paths and violations. The concept of clocking and metastability is discussed in brief along with interview questions. Unit 2: Gives a glimpse of various layout and design rules for CMOS based technology. The rules of the stick diagram are described in short along with probable interview questions. Unit 3: Explains how to place and route the various components on a single chip, which will optimize the design parameters. Unit 4: Deals with testing of VLSI chip using various test patterns and techniques. The stuck-at faults are described along with the concept of controllability. Appendix A: List of Digital circuit IC numbers. Appendix B: List of Keywords, System Tasks & Compiler Directives Used in Verilog HDL.
