This book aims to provide readers with an understanding of the fundamental building blocks of modern embedded systems that lie at the heart of billions of iot devices. teaching a course on embedded systems for over 40 years has exposed us to the various difficulties encountered by students while learning this topic. Writing this book is our attempt to provide a central support for conveying the field of embedded systems in the way we believe it should be taught. this book describes systems that have matured considerably over the past 40 years. one of the biggest differences between today’s embedded systems and those of yore is the fact that we now live in a world where devices can no longer afford to take up a large footprint. As a result, the industry has steered heavily towards the design and fabrication of energy-efficient systems on a chip (SoC), i.e., systems in which a single chip integrates most components needed to run a computer. SoCs have taken a prominent role in modern embedded systems and are likely to remain the dominant architecture of iot devices for the foreseeable future. this book covers embedded systems built around Arm Cortex-M processor cores, a popular Cpu architecture often used in modern low-power SoCs that target iot applications. though we illustrate modern SoCs using Arm’s Cortex-M core, the main principles used in such systems can be used to build SoCs with other processor cores as well.
