Not really. One of my projects is to use sub-threshold to increase the performance of a two-stage op amp. The result is so impressive that I realize it is a very useful technique. By the way, this technique is also adopted in many industrial applications.
If you want to be a professor, you may need this topic. If you want to be in industry, just throw sub-threshold away since no accurate model can support circuit design.
