It is hard to believe that it has been 21 years since the publication of the first edition of this book, and 11 years since the publication of the second edition. In the intervening years, the progress of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) has been staggering. GNSS usage is nearly ubiquitous, providing the position, velocity, and timing (PVT) information that enables applications and functions that permeate our daily lives. In 1996, when the first edition of this book was published, GNSS included two fully operational satellite navigation systems: the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Russian GLONASS. By the time the second edition was published in 2006, GNSS had regressed with respect to the total number of operational satellites due to a decline in size of the GLONASS constellation.
