I think it is the right way to write a netlist by hand, no matter what design platform you use, you should have a PDK, there is a device library, you use this library to design your schematic and layout, in this library, each device has different views, like symbol, layout, spice, lvs etc.., then you can extract your netlist directly.
for small circuit, you can write netlist mannually, for big circuits, it is not possible.
