A handbook and reference aid for the design, construction, and maintenance of telecommunications equipment incorporating phase-locked loops (PLL). An introduction is followed by detailed descriptions of elements, with emphasis on phase detectors. Servo device behavior in the frequency domain and in the time domain, within or beyond the linear operating range, is discussed, along with PLL stability. Part II covers linear operation of PLL, including use of PLL as coherent phase demodulator and frequency discriminator, and use of PLL as limiter or AGC device. Part III goes into nonlinear operation, with theoretical and experimental results. Acquisition of phase and frequency input signals by a 1st-order loop or 2nd-order loop, signal acquisition by auxiliary devices, and PLL operating threshold in the presence of noise are also discussed. Some PLL circuits are treated in an appendix.
