Modern electronic systems are predominantly digital, but most design problems have an analog origin. Noise, signal integrity, power stability, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and connection resistance are common problems. These problems can quickly cause any electronic system to deteriorate or fail. Digital systems are more tolerant of these problems, but fully digital devices can fail due to analog limitations. When explaining electronics, a simplified view gives a brief idea of how something should work. This “first-order” model is useful for simplicity and clarity, but often misses important details. This simple model is often incomplete, and many of the “second-order effects” that are not taken into account can significantly affect device performance.

This book is a reference guide for engineers, scientists and other designers who want to create an electronic system. The term "applied embedded electronics" covers a wide range of devices, including embedded controllers, mobile phones, medical instruments, computers and tablets, all household electronics, industrial robots, automation systems, and many others. All electronic devices using digital control methods also fall under this broad definition. The topics discussed here are common to all of these devices. The main focus here is on the design of hardware – actual circuits and systems – with a brief consideration of coding and software issues. It is assumed that the reader has an engineering or scientific education and has an understanding of fundamental electronics.
