By G.A. Rincon-Mora, Wiley-Interscience/IEEE Press, 2002. Current and voltage references are fundamental building blocks in every analog and digital integrated circuit. Thus they are often treated in many books that talk of integrated circuits design. However, up to now there was not a book which specifically discusses this theme. After an introduction, a chapter on basic concepts, the book analyses and in depth discusses constant, PTAT, and high order temperature-dependent current generators. Then it talks of zener and diode-based voltage generators and bandgap generators. Moreover, it reports a complete overview of the many techniques to achieve temperature compensation. In particular, after presentation of zero-order and first-order voltage reference, the various techniques to obtain higher-order compensation are presented in detail and compared. This set of techniques is particularly interesting since it is the first time they are organically collected and critically discussed. Finally, in the book are also included five appendices to the last two chapters. They satisfy the curiosity of advanced topics, which can be skipped by nononcurious readers, thus replying to an educational target. In general the book has a high educational value. Indeed, it presents the different arguments starting from the simpler solutions or from simplified cases and then reaching complex cases. Moreover, it extensively uses practical numerical examples. The industrial experience of the authors is apparently demonstrated overall in the text. Many practical and useful suggestions are reported and many of them regard real applications and implementations in microelectronic systems. Moreover, the last chapter treats aspects of systems and working environments such as trimming and trim networks, package-shift effects and layout implications, reporting information difficult to find in other books or international papers. The book is really interesting both for specialists in the topic and for postgraduate students who are already familiar with CMOS circuits, and it can be used a reference book for a course.
