abstract
Although originally developed for the military, the Global Po-
sitioning System (GPS) has proven invaluable for a multitude of
civilian applications. Each application demands specific perfor-
mance from the GPS receiver, and the associated requirements
often vary widely. This paper describes the architectures and
functions of civilian GPS receivers and then focuses on perfor-
mance considerations. The fundamental receiver measurements are
described and the quality of these measurements are related to the
aforementioned receiver architectures.

IF GPS Signal Simulator Development and Verification
关于GPS信号仿真和验证的一篇论文,摘要如下:
A software-based intermediate frequency (IF) GPS signal simulator for the L1 C/A code
signal is developed and verified in this thesis. The signal simulator is implemented in
MATLAB with some key functions coded  in C to accelerate speed of operation. A
mathematical signal model is developed that expresses the digitized IF GPS signal as a
function of various errors during propagation,  such as satellite clock error, ionosphere
error, and troposphere error; and user defined parameters, such as date and GPS time,
user trajectory, expected C/N0, noise density, intermediate frequency, sampling rate,
front-end bandwidth, and quantization bit. The  simulator is verified by comparing the
simulated signal with the hardware-collected IF GPS signal in the time,  frequency,
correlation and position domains.  

Partially for the simulator verification purpose, a software GPS receiver was developed
and verified, which was used to process the simulated signal to get the pseudorange and
carrier phase measurements. The signal acquisition and tracking techniques originally
studied and verified in this thesis were used for the first generation software receiver
developed by the PLAN group of the Department of Geomatics Engineering. The
receiver consists of the  following modules: signal acquisition, signal tracking, bit
synchronization, sub-frame synchronization and the navigation solution. It is verified by
using a set of real GPS signal measurements collected by a commercial hardware front-
end and comparing the tracking results and  navigation solution with the corresponding
results of a hardware GPS receiver.

Multicorrelator techniques for robust mitigation of threats to gps signal quality
Many applications that utilize the Global Positioning System (GPS) demand highly
accurate positioning information. Safety-critical applications such as aircraft navigation
require position solutions with not only high accuracy but also with high integrity. Two
significant threats to GPS signal quality exist which can make meeting both of these
requirements a difficult task.
Satellite signal anomalies, or “evil waveforms,” can result from soft failures of the signal
generating hardware onboard the GPS satellite. These subtle anomalies cause distortions of
the signal, which if undetected may pose an integrity risk to an aircraft relying on GPS.
Signal Quality Monitoring (SQM) is required to reliably detect these anomalies and thereby
protect airborne users from this integrity threat. Multipath, or undesired reflected signals
from the ground or other obstacles, also distorts the desired GPS signal. In addition to
making evil waveforms more difficult to detect, multipath—an ever-present error source—
also degrades nominal performance. Multipath mitigation techniques attempt to reduce or
eliminate this threat.
This thesis introduces novel signal processing techniques for addressing these twin
concerns. First, a comprehensive method for designing a robust signal quality monitor to
detect evil waveforms in the presence of multipath is described. This method is used to
specify a practical multiple-correlator configuration for the SQM receiver that satisfies the
requirements for Category I precision approaches for landing aircraft. Second, a new
ivv
multipath mitigation approach is introduced that leverages “multipath invariant” properties
of the GPS signals. A real-time Tracking Error Compensator (TrEC) algorithm is
experimentally shown to provide significant accuracy improvements over existing
techniques for low-end (or “narrowband”) receivers. Additionally, it is shown that TrEC
may have at least comparable multipath mitigation performance to that of a high-end (or
“wideband”) receiver technique.

Selected GPS Receiver Enhancements for Weak Signal Acquisition and Tracking
The sensitivity of a baseband signal processing unit, including both acquisition and
tracking, is critical for a GPS receiver to function in perturbed signal enviroments such as
indoors and under ionospheric scintillation.. To improve acquisition sensitivity, the dif-
ferential combining approach, which allows a 2.5 dB improvement in processing loss as
compared to noncoherent methods, is proposed herein. This results in a sensitivity im-
provement ranging from 1.2 dB to 1.6 dB for a given probability of false alarm and mi-
ssed detection.   
Based on an analysis of the Costas-family PLLs, carrier tracking is enhanced by optimiz-
ing loop configurations. The decision-directed loop , exhibits a 2  -dB sensitivity im-
provement as compared to other types of PLLs. Bandwidth and root deviation caused by
bilinear or boxcar transforms are solved by implementing a root-controled method. Using
this design makes the bandwidth of the digital loop close to desired values, and thus im-
proves carrier tracking by another 1 to 2 dB. A Kalman Filter adopts a soft-mode to deal
with the bit sign uncertainty and adjusts the bandwidth to minimize the mean square car-
rier tracking error. This leads to a 4 dB and 7 dB sensitivity improvement during weak
and strong amplitude ionospheric scintillations, respectively.
