Wireless systems are becoming increasinglypervasive and securing these systems has been challenging, in largepart due to the unique properties associated with wirelesscommunications. Securing these networks has traditionally beenapproached by taking a conventional approach involving cryptographicprotocols. Such an approach inherently seeks to secure the wirelessnetwork at the link layer and above, and consequently fails to leveragethe most unique characteristic of wireless communication: its physicallayer.
Securing Wireless Communications at the Physical Layer is acompilation of contributions by experts in wireless communications andsecurity, and presents state-of-the-art results that examine thechallenge of introducing security at the physical layer of a wirelesssystem. Throughout this book there is an underlying theme that the richmultipath environment that is typical of wireless scenarios supportsthe establishment of new security services at the physical layer,including new mechanisms that establish cryptographic keys, thatsupport communication with assured confidentiality, and that canauthenticate transmitters in mobile environments. The book takes aholistic approach to covering topics related to physical layer securitysolutions, with contributions ranging from the theoreticalunderpinnings behind secure communications to practical systemsvalidations that have been performed on real wireless systems. The bookalso covers topics related to ensuring that cooperative wirelesscommunications at the physical layer is trustworthy. Additionally, theemerging area of modulation forensics, whereby a device is able toidentify the modulation format being employed by other devices isexplored.
