Recent increases in Field Programmable Gate Array performance and size offer a new hardware acceleration opportunity. FPGAs are an array of programmable logic cells interconnected by a matrix of wires and programmable switches.. Each cell performs a simple logic function defined by a user's program. An FPGA has a large number (64 to over 20,000) of these cells available to use as building blocks in complex digital circuits. Custom hardware has never been so easy to develop.
Extremedsp™  from Xilinx makes a lot of signal processing functionality available to the developer. Blocks like Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT), Direct Digital Synthesisers (DDS) and even FIR filters are supplied as standard with the Xilinx tools.
A few years ago, high-end DSP systems were largely considered in terms of groups of DSP processors and data acquisition interfaces. Today, the FPGA offers some significant benefits including improved computational capabilities and a means of handling higher I/O bandwidths. By providing a mechanism
with which higher bandwidth data streams can be sensibly processed, FPGAs have enabled the utilization of significantly faster data acquisition technologies, and much much more.
近年来,在FPGA方面的进展为DSP未来的发展开辟了一个新的园地,例如塞灵思的ExtremeDSP系列产品为用户提供了很多的数字信号处理的功能,甚至FFT和FIR已经成为其标准的功能设置。所以,FPGA为未来进一步整合DSP的功能提供了有力的工具。
