Cognitive learning and intelligence have not yet been captured in today’s computers which are based on the Boolean logic and the von Neumann architecture. As compared to biological systems, today’s computers are less energy efficient by a factor of one million to one billion in dealing with the complex, real-world environmental problems such as image/speech recognition. The memory wall problem is one of the major limitations for further performance gain in the conventional computing paradigm.
