Abstract
In this paper we discuss the basic principles of direct sequence spread spectrum and their
relation to the development of CDMA mobile radio networks. The basic techniques of
modulation, spreading codes, synchronization, forward error control, and multiple access
are discussed. The application of these principles to the design of modern mobile communication
systems is presented. The basic architecture of a cellular system leads to design
choices involving the types of spreading codes, modulation, coding, and power control,
which are made with a goal to maximize network capacity.
